Proposition 19 is a 2020 law that gives older homeowners new property tax benefits. If you’re 55 or older, Proposition 19 lets you move anywhere in California and take your old home’s low property tax with you. That means you won’t face a hefty tax hike, you’ll keep paying roughly the same amount as before. You can use this benefit up to three times, helping retirees move without a financial penalty. Proposition 19 also changed how inherited homes work: now if your kids or grandkids inherit your house, they only keep your low Proposition 13 tax rate if they live in the house as their main home. Otherwise, the property will be taxed at its current market value.
